Problem #1

 

Completely mixed aeration systems are sometimes modeled using the Monod equation. 

 

1. Read sections 3-12 and 11-7 in your textbook. 

 

2. Work example 11-9 by hand, showing all your work.

 

3. Work the same example by placing all the equations on a spreadsheet.  

 

4. Use your spreadsheet to vary the values for Y and kd  (Table 11-6 shows typical ranges).  Plot the growth yield ratio (x-axis) versus the tank volume (y-axis) keeping the decay coefficient constant at 0.06 per day.  Plot the decay coefficient (x-axis) versus the tank volume (y-axis) keeping the growth yield ratio constant at 0.6. 

 

4.  Provide a discussion paragraph answering the following.  What do the constants Y and kd represent and how does varying those constants change the required tank volume?
