Descriptive Creative Word Play

Project Description:

Select 2 different words that allows you to use only letterforms and illustration to present a visual presentation.

It must contain information that can be translated visually into a multi-page/multi-screen information design solution. It must reflect a synthesis of what you have learned this semester as an information designer.

Issues Encountered:

I had a number of sketches, ranging from Kitty Cat to Dip Down. It took me quite some time to visualize all of the sketches I had, in order to percieve which sketch would be best to present in a visual pleasing form.

Solution:

After associating dish soap with "Wishy Washy," I immediately visualized suds, bubbles and water--something easily yet can be effectively executed in Illustrator to convey the meaning in a visual form. I then used gradients to make it seem as if the words were disintegrating.

Typography Self Portrait

Project Description:

Create a self portrait of yourself, using only fonts. Use typography to indicate various areas of your face.

Issues Encountered:

Initially, I thought this would be the most difficult project ever. I had so many doubts—how would I indicate things such as my brows, my hair and my eyes? In this course, we were forbidden to use any other software, other than Adobe Indesign, which made things difficult for me at the time since I was just a beginner.

Solution:

After a few minutes of fiddling around in Indesign and getting used to the program, I quickly realized the trick to getting the curvatures of one’s face through text— parentheses. They were all curves, after all! However, getting said parentheses to match your face was difficult, so I used a variety of fonts to get thicker and wider lengths. At the end of the day, I think the overall project was a success! It was my first project in Indesign and I began to refine my skills for that program throughout the course.
