In Irons

Project Description:

To apply video game industry frameworks to build software applications. To engage in teamwork, promotion of their game, the creation of their games, assets, and engagement into the video game industry.

Issues Encountered:

Our group decided on creating a rouge-like crawler and thus, multiple enemies, rooms and tiles need to be randomly generated. The inclusion of a variety of creatures will add a sense of adventure but thus requires a vast majority of art and assets.

Solution:

We have planned to cut a majority of the initial enemies list. Recoloring and reskinning will be a viable option to reduce the workload on the arts and assets department, allowing further progress and focus on other areas of the game.

Abra-Catdabra

Project Description:

To create an engaging, fun and visually appealing video game in groups. My partner, Nick Kowalchyk was in charge of programming while I was in charge of arts, assets, and design. We wanted to create a fun, cutesy adventure platformer that followed the tale of an adventurous wizard cat!

Issues Encountered:

We had a large concept that we wanted to tackle. We wanted skill trees, different attacks, a variety of monsters and various levels. However, we only had a school semester to work on the project and create the beta version for a presentation.

Solution:

Like the Grocery Bingo flyer, I wanted to use a strong, bright color to draw in one's attention. However, instead of using a bright, light blue, I opted to use a darker, navy blue/teal as a brighter color would be too harsh for one to read. I also created generic buildings with windows to symbolize Housing Tours. By using different splashes of muted greens and blues, I was also able to draw one's eyes to each important article of information.

EtiCats

Project Description:

To gamify a social situation into a playable game for the young students in Dolgeville, NY.

Issues Encountered:

Coming up with an interesting topic to gamify was difficult. I had initially wanted to create a card game that dealt with difficult school life/situations however, that was too vague and was difficult to translate into. Another issue was how I could try to incorporate cooperation, as humans are naturally competitive.

Solution:

I simplified “school activities” into difficult social situations and turned the characters into stray cats--animals that are often ignored and neglected. the characters are also cutesy and are attractive to young children; each stray cat also has strong attributes and weak attributes as well. Thus, I created an overall objective--to win together! that way, students would be forced to encourage and assist one another using each other's strengths.

Bring Him Home

Project Description:

Use Construct 2 to create a very simple, basic game.

Bring Him Home! is a very simple platformer game that I created in Construct 2 for a beginner Game Design course.

** I DID NOT CREATE ANY OF THE ASSETS USED IN THIS GAME **

Issues Encountered:

Although I knew Photoshop, I didn't possess the knowledge to create animations, sprites and sprite sheets. I did try to incorporate some of my own artwork, but being new to animation made it immensely difficult. I truly just wanted to focus on getting the logic working.

Solution:

I borrowed assets from an already existing game so I could focus on the logic and overall gameplay as a whole! I would love to revist this game and create my own assets now that I have the ability to do so.
